competition following his impressive win over Medrano. Hervey, who trains

the Cage lightweight championship with a win over *Victor Valenzuela* in
2009 and made seven additional appearances on KOTC cards. His most recent

power punchers of this caliber butting heads in the main event, the match-up
between Campbell and Hervey could end with a bang – literally. Campbell

Chattelle’s road to victory April 8th won’t be any easier; Nader lacks
Chattelle’s experience, but has similar power with three knockouts in four
professional wins. All of Nader’s knockout victories have come in the
opening round with the lone exception being a unanimous decision win over
Jose Lopez in 2009. Nader recently handed *Dustin Baker* his first

Chattelle’s power could be the equalizer; a knee to the face opened a
vicious cut over Weatherby’s eye in their Feb. 25 showdown, causing the

Educating Children and Adults About Sports Injuries

Sports are a wonderful way to teach your children about teamwork, sharing, and camaraderie. They are also the one place where, if precautions are not observed, serious injury can result. Neck Pain Different for Men and Women Study Says

Men and women may be doing the same work for the same pay in many cases, however they are not experiencing the same bodily aches and pains. Cases of pain and injury drastically increase in all careers for women, a recent Swedish study confirms. Several factors other than musculature and type of injury were found to be prevalent for women, rather than for men as originally suspected.

In every instance of neck pain, women were the bearers of greater complaints. One reason cited speculated that women tended to have a higher susceptibility to stress related pain than men under the same circumstances. Neck and upper back pain increased for women who were under stress psychologically or emotionally, as well as psychosocial factors present in the workplace.

Stress and neck pain more common in women than men

Neck pain is more common in women than men, irrespective of occupation or age. Stressed young women develop more neck pain than their male counterparts. Women also perceive everyday life to be more stressful, reveals a thesis from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

"There is an ongoing debate amongst researchers as to why muscle and joint pain, such as neck pain, are so common, and why this seems to be more prevalent among women than men," says Anna Grimby-Ekman, postdoctoral student and statistician at the Sahlgrenska Academy's Department of Public Health and Community Medicine. "We know that physical work with heavy lifting or assembly work that involves a lot of arm-raising above shoulder height can lead to neck pain. By looking at a group whose work is less physically demanding, we can more readily identify other factors that could be implicated and perhaps explain the generally high incidence of neck pain."

A questionnaire distributed to university students in Sweden – 627 women and 573 men – showed that neck pain is more common in women than men, and that more women than men developed neck pain during the four years of the study. These results were something of a surprise as the researchers had expected that roughly the same number of women as men would develop neck pain in a young group like this, where the majority had yet to start a family and studying meant that the women and men shared a similar working environment.

Questionnaires were distributed to a second group, this time 870 women and 834 men who constituted a representative selection of computer users from the Swedish workforce. Women reported more neck and upper back pain across the range of occupations covered. It was evident in both the computer users and the students that neck pain is affected by psychosocial factors, including the demands of work/studying.

"Perceived stress was more common among the women students than the men, and appeared to play more of a role in the development of neck pain in young women than in men," says Anna Grimby-Ekman.

Although the results would suggest that more female university students develop neck pain as a result of the factors examined, the studies also indicate that when it comes to young men there may be other factors behind the huge variations in the incidence of neck pain over time.

Winter Sports Injuries and Spine Care

While you are outside shoveling this winter, or playing at winter sports, remember that excessive strain on the spine can and does occur from many winter activities. Sports like skiing, hockey and even snowmobiling can having a jarring effect on the spine that may cause discomfort and even injury if left unattended.

Vertebrae become compressed with activities that have impact related movement. The muscles and joints can then become stiff and immobile, limiting range of motion and causing pain and discomfort. Poor posture may not be the only cause of back pain, but it certainly contributes.Never before have our lifestyles been as sedentary as they are currently. Office and computer workers sit in nearly one position all day long and type, elderly who are unable to move around as they once did, and even children are susceptible to neck pain through the excessive use of video games and lack of exercise.

Particularly exposed to the threat of back and neck injury, are health care workers, who are expected to lift and move patients unable to do so themselves. Often improper lifting, or lack of exercise, can cause health care workers to sustain injury to their back and neck muscles.

There are ways to prevent these kinds of injuries to the spine and muscles however. One such way is through activity. Even something as simple as a 20 minute walk every day has the potential to give your muscles much needed exercise and allow your body to strengthen through the movement.

If you are required to lift anything, or anyone, remember to practice safe lifting techniques by bending at your knees. This will help to preserve the health of your back, neck, and spine while avoiding unnecessary strain or injury.

Although anyone can benefit from stretching, elderly people with arthritis need to perform mild stretches every morning over the entire body to release any stiffness.

For those who work indoors in offices or at computers all day, try to take breaks periodically to give your body a chance to move around. Even a quick bathroom break can be turned into a few moments of exercise if you walk briskly and stretch your muscles. Be sure that the chair you use at your desk offers ample support for your back to help keep it straight, that you use wrist supports on your keyboard and mousepad, and get up slowly if you have been sitting for a long time.

Holistic Medicine Approach in Chiropractic Threatened by CCE?

Part of the holistic approach to medicine employed by chiropractors dictates that no surgery or medications be prescribed to patients during treatment. A recent proposal by the Council on Chiropractic Education sought to eliminate this language from the Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine degree, met with staunch disapproval and eventual rejection by the American Chiropractic Association, Congress of Chiropractic State Associations, and the International Chiropractors Association for good reason.

The Profession Has Spoken ... But Will the CCE Listen?

A few months back, the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) sent out a communique to interested parties asking for commentary about proposed changes it intends to adopt at its January 2011 meeting.
As outlined in my prior article ["What Is the CCE Trying to Pull?" Oct. 21 DC], the CCE proposed the following changes to its standards: adding the words "or their equivalent" to Doctor of Chiropractic degree programs, thusauthorizing the "Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine" (DCM) degree; deleting every reference to the word subluxation; and deleting the "without the use of drugs and surgery" provision.

I am very pleased to report that the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), and the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA) all officially opposed the proposed changes and submitted commentary to that effect. As a student of chiropractic history, I cannot remember another time that the chiropractic profession as a whole was unified on such an important issue.

And that's not all. Several chiropractic colleges (who rely on CCE for their accreditation) also submitted commentary in opposition to the changes, including Cleveland Chiropractic College (Kansas City and Los Angeles), Life University College of Chiropractic, Life Chiropractic College West, Logan College of Chiropractic, Palmer College of Chiropractic (including Palmer Florida and Palmer West), Parker College of Chiropractic and Sherman College of Chiropractic. To be candid, my hat goes off to these chiropractic colleges for having the courage to speak up against proposed changes that they felt were not in the best interest of the chiropractic profession.

But when trying to chart the best course for the chiropractic profession, the real future stakeholders are the current students of chiropractic colleges. While some might think that there is no way to measure their opinions and for their representative voice to be heard in regard to these important issues, they would be wrong.

At the annual meeting of the Student American Chiropractic Association (SACA) held in Newport, R.I., in early October, and without any preamble, a survey was taken of the SACA leaders representing 16 chiropractic colleges from across the country. Here are the results from that survey in regard to CCE's proposed changes:

* Removal of all references to the word subluxation: Agree: 6 SACA leaders; disagree: 32 SACA leaders.
* Removal of the reference to "without the use of drugs and surgery": Agree: 9 SACA leaders; disagree: 28 SACA leaders.
* Authorization for the Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine (DCM) degree: Agree: 1 SACA leader; disagree: 38 SACA leaders.

For those of you keeping score at home, SACA leaders opposed the three CCE proposed changes by an overall tally of 86 percent to 14 percent -- a landslide of incredible proportions. And it's important to remember that these individuals are elected ACA student leaders, not members of some chiropractic fringe group. Personally, the survey results make me proud - and excited - that the next generation of chiropractic leaders will be willing to protect and defend the core principles of the chiropractic profession.

So, what happens next? Well, the deadline has passed for official commentary to the CCE. However, rest assured, the 24 CCE "councilors" who are charged with making the final decision will be lobbied intensively by their pro-drug, pro-DCM degree, anti-subluxation friends and colleagues.

To hopefully counter that effort and so the profession's majority voice is not drowned out, I believe it would it would be beneficial for doctors in the field to contact CCE "councilors" you know personally, telling them that you oppose the proposed changes to the CCE standards and urging them to oppose their adoption.

Neck Pain Is Often Part of More Widespread Pain

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 1 (HealthDay News) -- Patients who report neck pain generally report additional pain in other body sites and reduced functioning associated with this widespread pain, according to research published in the Nov. 1 issue of Spine.

Bard Natvig, M.D., of the University of Oslo in Norway, and colleagues investigated the relationship between neck pain, other pain, and functioning. The researchers sent questionnaires about musculoskeletal pain to residents of Ullensaker in Norway, comprising seven birth cohorts. They received 3,325 responses. The participants were required to report whether, during the previous week, they experienced pain in one or more of the following areas: head, neck, shoulder, elbow, hand/wrist, upper back, lower back, hip, knee, and ankle/foot.

The researchers found that neck pain was reported most frequently as either regional pain (15.9 percent) or part of widespread pain (14.8 percent). Only 1.4 percent reported localized neck pain. Those who had neck pain that was part of widespread pain reported reduced functioning compared with other neck pain groups.

"Epidemiological research on neck pain that does not assess other pain sites will miss a crucial dimension. Also, in clinical medicine, increased awareness of pain patterns coexisting with neck pain might be important in the search for causes, prediction of prognosis, as well as choice of treatment," the authors conclude.

The verification site is a partnership with the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) that links to a national database for workers' compensation coverage by employer name or federal employer identification number.

Rhode Island's neighboring states — Massachusetts and Connecticut — also offer online verification for workers' compensation insurance.

Dr. Stephen Estner is the best chiropractic physician in Rhode Island, in my opinion, especially for people who have suffered neck, back and other injuries from an auto accident. I am a community based social worker and my car was totaled by another driver while waiting for the light to change. What I didn’t consider was the amount of physical damage that was done to my body. A couple days later I went from being soar to being frozen and immobile with pain. I located Dr Estner through a web search at 3pm on a Friday. I knew I was taking a gamble by calling so late. Dr Estner answered the phone and the kind voice suggested I come right in. He treated me right away and I was immediately relieved from my pain and able to move about. I had never been treated by a chiropractor before and if I didn’t experience it myself, I wouldn’t have believed the instant results. Upon reviewing the x-rays, I was shocked to find that I would be at his office 3 times a week plus massage therapy for the tissue and muscle damage I incurred. Most sports injuries can be prevented with proper education. For football players, this becomes vital to the prevention of catastrophic sports injuries while playing the game. Teaching players to keep their head up, and employing various exercises designed to build strength in the neck, shoulder and cervical spine regions, will help to offset many muscle injuries in the neck and spine area.

The best prevention however, is teaching football players how not to block their opponents. The spine falls under a great deal of stress when a football players uses his helmet to block. The spine, surrounding ligaments, and muscles cannot absorb the impact of this kind of use. The helmet should never be the point of contact for any player.

All coaching staff needs to be instructed by a licensed Chiropractor so that they can then instruct the players on the team. In addition to basic body mechanics, every player needs to be instructed in the proper execution of a play. It is not merely about scoring a touchdown, but about protecting the spine while playing as well.

Each team member needs to understand the muscle building and flexibility exercises that need to be done to protect the cervical spine, as well as having properly fitted helmets. Not allowing players to use their heads as a batting ram during plays will significantly reduce both minor and catastrophic sports injuries for all football teams in RI.

Cranston RI Chiropractor Stephen M. Estner Named as Liaison to American Chiropractic Association’s Local RI Liaison Program

September, 2010 – Cranston RI – RI chiropractor Stephen M. Estner was recently named as a local liaison for the American Chiropractic Association. The Association currently has 21 states participating as members, and recently added Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Mississippi, New York, Ohio and the US Virgin Islands to the program roster.

The focus of the ACA is to provide a support system to assist and collaborate within each state regarding insurance-related issues. An ACA appointed Doctor of Chiropractic Liaison member works with ACA staff and State leadership and organizations to address any specific challenges.
Dr. Estner said of his appointment to the Rhode Island ACA Liaison position, “It is an honor and privilege to represent the Chiropractors of the State of RI as the appointed member DC working as liaison to the American Chiropractic Association staff. Back to School Means Back and Neck Pain for Many Children Carrying Backpacks

The statistics in a recent study in Britian involving school age children and the incidence of backpack related back and neck pain among 11 to 14 year olds noted a direct correspondence between low back pain and excessively heavy backpacks. Of those children involved in the study, 27% stated they had neck pain, 18% stated they suffered from upper back pain, and 22% stated they had low back pain.

With back to school around the corner, it seems important that we revisit these issues involving our children and the potential for serious spinal discomfort or injury due to excessive loads being carried in their backpacks. Other factors that contribute to back and neck pain in children involve the limitations inherent in school furniture and lack or ergonomic design causing further conduct and emotional problems.

Throughout the study, upper back pain demonstrated a direct correlation with backpack weight, emotional problems, school furniture and any previous injury or treatment of pediatric musculoskeletal pain.

Complaints of low back pain were mainly associated with previous injury or accident and were exacerbated by school furniture and emotional issues.

Additional details of the study reveal that backpack weight can have serious and detrimental effects on posture while carrying loads over 10% of a child's weight and placing the load assymmetrically (on one side or the other) versus even distribution between the shoulders and spine.

The most common weight of between 8kg and 12kg carried once a week by a child of an average age of 12 years, pushed the physiological limits of the child's postural system.

In addition to parents limiting the amount their child carries in their backpack to 10% of total body weight (not the current 22% that is typically common), making sure that the load weight is evenly distributed, and that any complaints of pain by your child are dealt with immediately with a visit to at least a family physician if not a pediatric chiropractic physician, parents can help to minimize or eradicate completely any long term spinal injury effects.

Chronic tension, neck pain, and back pain are common side-effects for many of us who work with computers or in office positions all day. The pain originates when certain muscle groups get over-burdened by this stress and what can be done to alleviate the pain and practice whole spine comfort techniques.

The act of typing, reaching for items above our heads, lifting a child or carrying groceries can all cause stress and 'hunching up' of the muscles in the upper back and neck. This stress causes these mucles to get locked into one position and eliminates the involvement of the other muscles that could offer extra support.

These muscles in our shoulders are constantly jumping in to help whenever we use our upper back or neck muscles. Because of this, their constant contraction inhibits our ability to relax the shoulders enough to stop the chronic upper back and neck pain that accompanies this involuntary muscle behavior.

A position sitting at a desk or over a keyboard all day, will greatly enhance this reaction in the shoulders, causing us to hunch over and create even more stress for this area.

Some ways to alleviate this habit and resulting pressure on the muscles in the neck and upper back are getting a massage, learning how to self-massage the area, taking hot baths, improving your posture (which can be achieved through regular spinal adjustments as well as exercise) and begin to make a routine of doing stretching and strengthening exercises designed to target the upper back and neck areas such as yoga and swimming, combined with in-office stretching periodically.

Almost every automobile accident involves damage of one kind or another to the spine. Whether it is as simple as whiplash, to something more serious or complex, spinal injuries are the predominant injury in car accidents.

The chiropractic profession focuses upon total body health through the proper alignment of the spine. Every part of the body is connected directly through the spinal column and nervous system. It would make perfect sense and stand to reason then that when the spine is not properly aligned, the rest of the body will not perform well either. Even the smallest misalignment can produce difficulties in the body in many forms depending upon which part of the spine is affected.

The resulting pain and discomfort that occurs following an accident is often a direct result of the injury to the spine. Headaches, neck and back aches, even muscle aches can be attributed to the misalignment of the spine during trauma. Left untreated, this misalignment can cause further and more severe discomfort and pain down the road.

In the past, insurance companies and attorneys have been reluctant to refer patients to chiropractors for the treatment of these injuries, believing instead that the trauma would best be relieved by more traditional muscle manipulation treatments and medical doctors.

This process can often be lengthy and expensive, and after treatment subsides, the patient is sometimes left with the same aches and pains returning. Although chiropractors are able to eliminate most aches, pains and symptoms completely, after careful examination and radiology reports, if a chiropractor becomes aware that there is degeneration or a serious compromise to the discs within the bone structure of the spine, the patient will be referred to an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation and treatment.

Chiropractors are holistic practitioners, meaning they examine the entire body when diagnosing or treating a patient, as well as mainly focusing on preventive care as a way to avoid disease and degeneration of the body.

After falling in the bathtub years ago, I suffered pain in my hips, back and numbness in my left thigh. A coworker recommended seeing a Chiropractor and gave me Dr. Estner's number to call. Dr. Estner ordered x rays and then consulted with me. By looking at the x rays he immediately started me on a series of tests, treatments and stretching exercises.

After weekly treatments, 2 to 3 times a week, the numbness was dissipating, the spine was being adjusted and the hips were put back in place. This was over 7 years ago and I still see Dr. Estner for adjustments on a regular basis.

Cranston Chiropractor Alleviates Migraines

When you have migraines the first thing you want is a doctor who will give you a pill to get rid of the pain. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT over and over. From one neurologist to another, from pills to MRI’s, I got some relief but it didn’t last.

Doctor Estner came along via a wellness seminar. I was frightened the first few time he adjusted my neck and back. Now I see him every three weeks for maintenance of the migraines (my choice by the way). I no longer carry migraine meds with me everywhere I go. I am amazed by the techniques used and the relief I receive with every visit.

Obviously I still get migraines and take medication. The chiropractic visits have helped reduce the migraines from two to three times a week to two times a month. For me, that’s a blessing.

Providing visual and audio learning opportunities for patients of chiropractic care can be one of the most efficient and valuable assets any chiropractor could imagine.

On June 1, 2010, Gaffney Physical Therapy, and Dr. Alisa Webber-Gaffney and staff, will be partnering with Dr. Stephen M. Estner in his Pawtucket practice location at 7 George Street, Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

The partnership will bring Dr. Webber-Gaffney’s expertise in the areas of pediatrics and the treatment of injuries to extremities as well. Gaffney Physical Therapy is currently located in Cranston, RI and offers evaluation and treatment of pediatric and adult patients for occupational and physical therapy, as well as one on one or group personal training.

On April 13, 2010, Dr. Stephen M. Estner presented before a gathering of attorneys for The Rhode Island Association for Justice's "Auto Tort Seminar" held at The Westin Providence. A large group of Rhode Island Personal Injury Attorneys were on hand for the seminar entitled, “The Not So Simple Auto Accident Case.” Dr. Estner was the chiropractor chosen by the attorney community to speak at this prestigious event.

Dr. Estner was asked to present on the care and treatment of auto accident victims, specifically on topic of ‘soft tissue injuries’. “I was excited and thrilled to be asked to speak at this event," Dr. Estner stated. “It was wonderful to be able to share my knowledge in this area with so many attorneys at the same time.”

Dr. Estner was the only chiropractor invited to speak at this seminar and he presented in conjunction with a local neurologist. Battered health care needs holistic approach

This week's column deals with the incredible connection between our minds and bodies.

Our official health care system grew through the 1900s. When penicillin and other drugs were developed, it was easy to test them to see how well they worked. Research reduced everything to the smallest particle, with no concern for the patient as a whole.

This approach to health is what philosophers term 'dualist', meaning that the mind and body are entirely separate and distinct. Most of us are well aware that this isn't reality.

All of the mainstream health problems that suck up the majority of our resources are preventable through lifestyle choices and natural care approaches that use the mind and body's healing powers.

The mind-body connection is one aspect of this.

So what does the research say? A recent issue of Spine Journal (Vol. 32, Jan. 2007) reported that lower back pain was directly linked to psychological factors. High stress at work, lower wages, little job satisfaction and depression all had a significant influence on the prevalence and prognosis on lower back pain.

Lower back pain is not a life threatening disease but is the number one cause of time off work. The economic impact is huge.

If back pain was so simple, then taking the wooden puppet's pills would work every time. It is not simple, as anyone suffering from back pain will tell you.

The second example is to do with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition where the patient reports multiple areas of pain in specific points over the body.

Because it is associated with difficulty in doing activities at home and at work, many fibromyalgia patients are not able to work. There are no drugs or pills that control the pain and the most help is obtained through multiple holistic approaches. Many people report benefit from both manual care and herbal supplements.

An August 2006 report in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry (Vol. 67) links fibromyalgia with depression, anxiety, eating disorders and substance abuse, conditions which are mind related.

The third example is from the Journal of Internal Medicine (February 2007) showing that cynical distrust, chronic stress and depression are associated with higher levels of blood inflammation, which is directly related to cardiovascular diseases.

Finally, people suffering from lower back pain respond in a hypersensitive way to stress and emotional stimuli. (Clinical Journal of Pain,October 2006) The results showed that healthy subjects with no pain were better able to cope with and handle stresses, unlike those with back pain.

So what does this mean and why is this of interest to me as a chiropractor and you as a patient?

Our minds and bodies are connected in ways that the best researchers may never completely understand. Those of us who are called on to care for people are acutely aware that the whole person has to be considered for a good outcome.

Treating a patient for lower back pain, for example, without understanding the impact that the back pain is having on work tasks, playing with the kids and other activities of daily living is less than optimal care. It is these non-physical issues that all good caregivers must take into account in facilitating a patient's recovery.

The ounce of prevention - pound of cure analogy applies to most health conditions. We will have a better chance at saving our battered health care system by adopting a more holistic approach to illness, disease and preventing problems before they start.

How Chiropractic Medicine Works

The spine is comprised of 33 small bones (segments) called vertebrae. Between these segments and holding them together, are ligaments. The spine houses the spinal cord which transmits signals to the rest of the body through nerves that emerge from the spinal cord and travel throughout the body. Damage to any one of the segments of the spine will have serious and detrimental consequences, not just for the rest of the spine, but for the entire body as well.

When one or more segments of the spine sustain damage, depending upon the severity of the damage, they will begin to exert pressure on the nerves emerging from each segment. When this happens, the victim feels pain that may or may not be isolated to the neck and back. Other symptoms may appear in other parts of the body as well, depending upon the nerves that are being pinched by the displaced spinal segment or segments.

In order to alleviate the pain, a chiropractor needs to realign the spine. Chiropractic medicine is based on the belief that when the spine is not aligned, optimum health is not available to the body, and illness and pain will result.

Chiropractors use a combination of electrical muscle stimulation, massage, and spinal adjustments to realign your spine. The adjustments are always performed by the doctor themselves, and may involve a cracking or popping sound. The adjustments help the segments realign and restore the range of motion to the spinal column, reducing any nerve pressure and assisting in the healing process.
